Emma Smetana was considered for the role of Vera Stovícková, which was eventually played by Tatiana Pauhofová. A somewhat Hollywoodized depiction of the role of the media, especially radio, in bringing the scent of democracy to Czechoslovakia in 1968. The story focuses on two brothers, one conformist and the other rebellious. Their arc provides an anchor in everyday life – as opposed to the “collective hero” radio workers trying to break free from censorship and broadcast unbiased news – something unheard of in the era of official socialist truth. Much of the film’s influence comes from the current political climate, the war in Ukraine very close to the Czech Republic/Slovakia. Are we destined to repeat history?
