Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t seen GoT, but now that it’s over, you’re considering a marathon. What’s consensus? In this case, the consensus is right: Seasons 1-6: Excellent. Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, Hollywood-worthy epic sets, professional acting, detailed plot, genuine surprises, great soundtrack, used sparingly. GoT is definitely worth a watch this time of year.
There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soap opera drama
Season 7: Suddenly you realize that the quality of the script and plot has dropped drastically. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it’s a pass. Season 8: That plunge into an abyss you never thought possible. The writing has become so amateurish that even the wonderful production values aren’t enough to save it. If you ever enjoyed Lost but were shocked by the poor quality of the last season, you’re on familiar ground here.
We lost our disbelief
The biggest problem with the last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. Fatal for the fiction. It also ruined the series arcs to the point that it’s pointless to rewatch the entire series. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies? Yes, the first six seasons are worth the later disappointments.
But it’s not the best show ever
It could have been, but dropping the ball in the final stretch leaves you behind the next superior series more worthy of your marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003–2008), Twin Peaks (all three seasons plus the movie), Breaking Bad
