In the eternal city of Macondo, seven generations of the Buendía family overcome love, oblivion, and the inevitability of their past and their destiny. This is the most expensive Netflix project created in Latin America to date, with Colombian teams and indigenous communities creating the props and scenery for the series. 100 años de soledad is one of the great peaks of Spanish-language literature. Its style is unparalleled and its scale exceeds imagination. Its characters are so well-characterized that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. But, apparently, the insurmountable problem of adapting the novel was its length. Summarizing a hundred years of family history and national history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic port on Netflix. Only streaming can do it justice, and the first 2 episodes are really promising. Great cinematography, art direction, and credit to the characters. García Márquez’s wonderful prose is well-received, with voice acting needed to make it stand out from time to time. The plot develops smoothly with richness and depth. I love it, and I was a little skeptical that the magical world of GGM could be transferred to the screen. Wow, so far this is a success in my book. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the biggest TV and streaming premiere this month. Check out our December calendar for more!
