David Kaplan: Yes

The mismatched cousins reunite for a trip to Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the tension between the odd couple resurfaces against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the location is where Jesse Eisenberg;s real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora. Benji Kaplan: We move, we stay light, we are agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor comes over to take the tickets, we tell him we are going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: The bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train and starts walking towards the front, looking for a stribai.

Benji Kaplan: Yes

David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we stribai? When he gets to the front, the train will be at the station, and we will be free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid. Tickets are probably like twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: It’s the principle of the matter. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. This is our country.

David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap. 12 Etudes, Op. 25, No. 3 in F major Written by Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. I think the only reason I went to see this movie was because of Kieran Culkin. What can I say, I love Succession.

Both actors do a great job, especially Culkin

And I definitely got more than I initially expected. This movie was clearly written from the heart, and Jesse Eisenberg’s script is really strong, with great dialogue and constantly different interpretations of the phrase ‘Real pain.’ Benji and David have very compelling arcs, and the rest of the characters, while not three-dimensional, are given ample time to shine, especially James. As for the directing, Jesse Eisenberg makes a good debut. The film is well shot, and while there isn’t much variety, the film evokes a simple yet realistic tone. Eisenberg handles some important points, and I think he does them well. I was surprised by some of the things he was able to film on location, which makes some of the emotions even more impactful. But of course, the strongest aspect of this film is the performances and dynamic between Eisenberg and Culkin.

Check it out if you can

Benji’s character is truly captivating throughout the film, as the audience constantly sees the aftermath of his grief, and David’s reactions to it further strengthen their bond. Even though they are cousins in this film, they really feel like brothers reconnecting. Overall, I had a good time with this film myself. I doubt it’s going to blow anyone away and it doesn’t have moments of extreme catharsis, but everything it does, it does quite well.
