Married petty crooks Lou-Jean (Goldie Hawn) and Clovis Poplin (William Atherton) lose their child in Texas and decide to do everything possible to get it back. Lou-Jean breaks Clovis out of prison, and they both steal a son from his foster family and also take a highway patrolman hostage. When a huge network begins to pursue them across Texas, the pair become unlikely folk heroes and even begin to bond with a captured police officer.
